URN - Self Sabotage (2024, n°170)
mc/digital

Self Sabotage is a new album by prolific Slovak composer and guitar player Jakub Volovár aka URN. Volovár spent several years in Denmark and Self Sabotage is his fourth (and third for Stoned to Death) and last album composed in the atmosphere of Aarhus, which struck Volovár with its “omnipresent depression”, however due to school duties he stayed few years too long. One could read this album as a parting letter with a place that kept you under a flaccid but permanent bipolar grip and once the gripping hand got tired for a moment you rather jump on the first train out.

Moods of this album are shifting from noir paranoia (Counting Sheep) to mania phases (Farmer Accountant), sometimes Volovár just pummels listeners with walking bass heaviness, that would certainly shine on any David Lynch soundtrack (Talking Owls; Mental Trenches). Other times he is the sad, lonely and last flamenco troubadour on earth playing to a bunch of scattered goats on the top of the hill (Peak of Sentimentality; If Handshake Was As Good As A Hug). Self Sabotage certainly won't let you at ease and won't bury you with tonal minimalism. Hell, if you are here for the rhythm heavy jazz cocktail noodle, you will even get a bit of that (Sharp Minds vs. Sharp Elbows).

Self Sabotage is released in edition of 80 tapes with original artwork by Roman Havlice, Volovár's and Stoned to Death longtime collaborator.

Volovár is currently living somewhere in Tuscany.
