Freedom Colony is the new (and third) full-length album by the seven-piece squadron called Vellocet Roll. Their last record was released in 2021, and just a quick listen of their new album will make it pretty clear where the last five years have gone. Freedom Colony is a collection of sixteen enigmatic tracks (and moody fillers) that invites repeated listenings on which you can slowly peel the skins and penetrate the core of the record. The songs on the album took shape on a long journey through home studios, rehearsal rooms, vans, notebooks and stages. Sounds and instruments were piled on them layer by layer. The skeletons of the songs slowly stick out their claws like the summer heat before breakfast, which takes a slightly different shape each morning.
Rooted in post-punk, the sound of Vellocet Roll may remind you of the sound of Bristol bands from the late 70s. A fight of two, but often three guitars, intense cloudbusting bass, genre-accurate, yet inventive drums (as Mark E. Smith would have liked), supported by a cannonade of bongs, breezy and wild sax and well lubricated with layers of synths and samples. Sometimes it's an urban dub from a hot Žižkov street, other times a prayer of a dreamer from the rehearsal room, sometimes an anthem for football ultras. Just don't be surprised when the ultimate steel guitar comes crushing on you in “Down With The Broken Heart”.
“Freedom Colony” is released as the 223rd title on the Stoned to Death label in an edition of 260 vinyls with screen-printed covers (available in blue-white and black-white versions). The artwork, labels and variations on the STD logo were made by Barbora Gallová. The front cover, which was created by multi-phase analog processing of the collage, was created by the spirit of the band František Převorovský. Mix and mastering by Dominik Gajarský (Slow Motion Dancer).
